New_Jameson_Bottle

Today in The Secret Lair, I reveal an ancient Irish cold remedy, passed down in my family for generations.

You will need:

  • 1lb of Corned Beef
  • 2 slices of hearty wheat bread
  • Four slices of Dublin Cheddar
  • Horseradish
  • The Peel of Two Lemons
  • Duct Tape
  • A plastic bag (1 gallon sized)
  • 3–5 cups of Jameson’s Irish Whiskey (unless better can be found), combined with 1–4 tsps of lemon juice and 1–4 tbsps of honey.
  • A box of Steel-Cut Irish Oatmeal

A Modern Father’s Morning Paper

January 9, 2012, by Chris
secret_lair150_txt

This morning in The Secret Lair, I talk about how a modern man reads his morning paper:

Like any modern person who is well-versed in the ways of the Internet, I know that I can get better news, more timely, more interesting, more custom tailored to my needs by subscribing to a number of RSS feeds and social stream instead of subscribing to my local newspaper.  The hitch in the plan has always been the laptop…I dislike having the laptop and keyboard in front of me when reading.  The reason is purely psychological: as someone who spends all day in front of a traditional computer, I prefer that my off-time be a lap– and desk-top free as possible.

Digital Scofflaws

December 2, 2011, by Chris
scofflaw2

Last weekend, I sat down with scholar and gentleman Thomas Gideon to discuss how the idea of scofflaws developed during Prohibition, and how the term may or may not apply to persons who stand in opposition to legal statutes like the DMCA, SOPA, and the PROTECT IP act.  He aired the conversation on his excellent podcast.

Interview on Living Proof Brew Cast

November 21, 2011, by Chris
st-peters-sorghum-beer

This week, I was a guest on the Living Proof Brew Cast, hosted by John Taylor Williams and Thomas Gideon.  Their show notes are replicated below:

We turned to the reason we invited Chris on, a discussion of gluten free beers and brewing. Chris shared his experiences and impressions from about half a month so far of drinking only gluten free beers. He reminded us why he is doing this for the month of November. In addition to the St. Peter”s he mentioned at the outset, Chris has also tried RedBridge, Lakefront New Grist, and Bard’s.

John has mentioned William Davis’ “Wheat Belly” before, when we were ruminating on the effectiveness of Evo’s brew diet. He brought it up again as being relevant to why wheat may cause some people grief even in the absence of celiac or an actual allergy. Chris offered a similar read that provokes thought around food culture and industry, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan. In addition to reading and research, Chris is taking a very considered approach that includes journaling his experiences and impressions.

November is for Boobies

October 18, 2011, by Chris
know-anything-month-further-somewhat-topical-ecard-someecards

As Rudyard Kipling once said, “Now is the time to talk of many things, of beards, and boobs, and…”

That’s right. It’s Beards4Boobs time again.

As the title suggests, November is all about the boobies. Every November, a few dedicated people shave off all their facial hard and do not shave again for a month. You, the viewer of the contents, can donate money and sponsor a beard. All the collected funds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Center.

Day Seven : Full of Stars

    Medina, Ohio

I get my coffee from a little custom roastery in the town of Autumn Falls, Ohio. My old friend from high school, Aloysius (a.k.a. Lush, as in, “You drink too much, you lush.”) Washington owns the place. He set it up back in 1995, before Starbucks came to Cleveland. He was the [...]

I have spoken about beards in this place on several occasions, and at great length. But to truly understand the noble value of the crackling virility hedge, one does not need copious words or vast descriptors. For the true worth of the face-mane can be summed up by five simple virtues: 1: *Tenacity* 2: *Wisdom* […]

First, let me congratulate my fellow Overlords and Mad Scientists on the successful deployment of the weather control satellite. During the last week I have personally witnessed a wide variety of climatic and atmospheric conditions: pleasant spring jacket temperatures, deep autumnal fogs, even snow and freezing rain. I was particularly impressed by the local […]
